From Greek rhodon, `rose' silvery-white metal
of the platinum family; symbol Rh, atomic
number 45, atomic weight 102.91. It is used
in thermocouples and in electroplating, and
gives a corrosion-free, highly polished
surface, superior to that of chromium.
Rhodium was discovered 1803 by the British
chemist William Wollaston (1766-1828). Its
salts form red solutions, and occurs with
platinum in river sands in the Urals and the
Americas.
